White Feathers of the Yan Mountains

Ku Wuji · AI Music · 3 reads

Inspired by Li Bai's Song of the North Wind. In the twelfth lunar month, when the Torch Dragon does not reach the northern lands, the north wind roars and snowflakes over the Yan Mountains are as large as mats. A wife in Youzhou, longing for her husband, stops singing and laughing, leans at the door and searches every retreating figure again and again. What finally arrives is news of his death on the frontier. Unable to bear looking again at his white-feathered arrows, covered in cobwebs and dust, she burns them to ashes. Even the Yellow River could be stopped with handfuls of earth, but the anguish of the north wind, rain and snow cannot be cut away. Male and female voices sing the same lyrics.

A line from the song

Snowflakes as large as mats, each one falling on Xuanyuan Terrace

The north wind comes roaring down from the sky

Music in the words

Lyrics

[Intro]

[Verse 1]

Zhulong, the Torch Dragon, sleeps at the Gate of Cold

Only when it opens its eyes does the sky grow light

But even Zhulong cannot be bothered to look here

Only the north wind remains outside the door

Youzhou city in the twelfth month

Snow buries every roof

[Pre-Chorus]

I stop singing and stop smiling too

My brows knot into a sorrow that will not dissolve

[Chorus]

Snowflakes as large as mats, each one falling on Xuanyuan Terrace

The north wind comes roaring down from the sky

Daylight refuses to reach this place

The white-feathered arrow is covered in dust

The arrow still hangs on the wall, but its owner is gone

This grief is harder to cut away than wind and snow

[Verse 2]

Others urge me not to keep leaning in the doorway

I keep guessing at every figure walking away

That year, sword in hand, he saved the frontier

How gallant he was, cloaked against the wind and striding through snow

Leave this quiver behind

The tiger-patterned gold ornaments still shine

[Pre-Chorus]

In a corner no one has touched

Layer upon layer of cobwebs seals the quiver shut

[Instrumental]

[Verse 3]

The messenger arrives at the door

A name becomes a calamity

I dare not look at that arrow again

That person will never return

What should I do with it

Light a fire to send it on its way

[Bridge]

In the firelight he turns back and smiles

Still the same bright spirit as when you left

Burn through this pair of white-feathered arrows

A part of my heart falls empty too

黄河捧土尚可塞 — Even the Yellow River could be blocked with handfuls of earth

Grief is harder to command than the waters of the Yellow River

The snow will fall again next year

My winter will never change again

[Verse 4]

From now on, I will no longer lean against that door

Snow covers the footprints once again

The things left in the room

Memories as plentiful as a sea

Others endure winter after winter

My calendar has stopped on a stretch of blankness

[Final Chorus]

Snowflakes as large as mats, each one falling on Xuanyuan Terrace

The north wind comes roaring down from the sky

Daylight refuses to reach this place

The white-feathered arrow is covered in dust

The arrow still hangs on the wall, but its owner is gone

This grief is harder to cut away than wind and snow

[Outro]

Snow is still falling over the Yan Mountains

Flake after flake still falls on Xuanyuan Terrace
